Why I’ve been quiet: busy creating queer stories
It's been a wee while, but I've been busy developing a new long-form series of writing as well as video, exploring how we can tell our queer stories with some incredible writers.
Firstly, thank you for your patience. I last left you with How do I know I’m a Bottom, which granted, is quite the mic drop, but I promise you it will be worth the wait.
Without further ado, I would like to introduce Queerly Beloved: Tales of Identity and Belonging.
Material Queer is taking a bold step forward with the launch of Queerly Beloved: Tales of Identity and Belonging, a new series showcasing long-form and video content that delves into the diverse and nuanced experiences of queer individuals across the UK.
This initiative is a celebration of LGBTQ+ culture in its many forms - fashion, history, art, and beyond - crafted by some of the most talented writers and artists from the community.
For the past few weeks, I’ve been deeply involved in planning this series, which has kept me occupied but also filled with excitement about what’s to come. The series will offer fresh perspectives and authentic voices, providing a platform for stories that often go untold in mainstream media.
Material Queer has always been about championing the bold, the rebellious, and the timeless elements of queer culture, and this series will be no different. It’s a space where queer people can see their realities reflected and where others can gain a deeper understanding of the LGBTQ+ experience.
Kicking off next week, I’m so excited to introduce a lineup of incredible writers who are delving into the diverse facets of queer life. David Opie deep dives into the messy history of LGBTQ+ dating shows, while Khadija Osman explores the undeniable connection between goth culture and queerness.
Serge takes on the pressing issue of homelessness within the LGBTQ+ community, and Emily Garside revisits the complexities of high school life from a queer perspective. Alim Kheraj gives us a glimpse into the booming queer bookshop scene, and Daniel Scheffler examines the lonely ‘I’ within the LGBTQI identity and the fabulous Ben Pechey ponders the evolving nature of activism in 2024.
This is queer storytelling at its best straight to your inbox.
At Material Queer, I believe in the power of storytelling, especially when those stories come from voices that have historically been marginalised. To ensure that our writers and creators are fairly compensated for their hard work, all funds from paid subscriptions go directly back into the platform.
I can’t emphasise enough the importance of being paid fairly for creative work. I want to support our contributors in a way that honours their talent and dedication. Your subscription isn’t just a purchase; it’s an investment in independent journalism and the celebration of queer culture. By subscribing, you help us continue to produce high-quality, meaningful content that amplifies the voices of LGBTQ+ writers, ensuring that they can keep doing what they do best - telling stories that matter.
So, if you value these perspectives and want to make a difference, consider becoming a paid subscriber to Material Queer, for as little as £3.50 a month. Your support directly impacts the lives of our contributors, allowing us to continue providing a platform where their voices can be heard and their work can thrive.
